How to bring your parent or grandparent to the UK
Who can qualify as an Adult Dependant Relative?
The adult dependant can be a child, brother, sister, parent or grandparent. This relative must need long-term care from you.
The dependant relative has to be 18 years or older. He/she would need long-term care for everyday tasks due to age, disability or illness. The application requires extensive proof in the form of medical evidence and other documents. The application also requires proof that such long-term care is not available or affordable in the country the adult dependant is currently living in.
Should a person not qualify, the Home Office will consider exceptional circumstances. It is best to speak to your Breytenbachs consultant in this regard.
The dependant must be outside the UK at the time of the application. The application is also submitted outside the UK.
Who can qualify to bring over an Adult Dependant relative?
To qualify to bring over an adult dependant, you have to have one of the following statuses in the UK:
- Irish citizenship
- British citizenship
- Indefinite Leave to Remain, Settled Status or Permanent Residence
- Pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
- Humanitarian protection or refugee status
How long can the adult dependant relative stay?
The length of time that an adult dependant can stay is determined by the person’s status providing long-term care.
If that person has citizenship or settled status, the dependant can stay for an unlimited time.
In other cases, the dependant can stay as long as the relative stay and need to apply for an extension or settlement when the relative does.
