Cape Town: Prominent SACP leader and his daughter, aged six, shot dead

Siyabulelwa Siswana and his young daughter have both been killed by unknown suspects, following a shooting at his Mfuleni home in Cape Town. Siswana, a secretary for the South Africa Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape, represented the Brian Bunting District next to Khayelitsha’s sprawling township.

Both victims died in hospital after they were rushed there on Wednesday evening. Siswana’s wife was also brutally attacked, and she is receiving intensive treatment in a local medical facility. It’s understood that she remains in a critical condition while fighting for her life.

Police search for murder motives

The violence itself is of a shocking nature. A six-year-old child was gunned down in cold blood, and understandably, both the regional community and the SACP are desperate to secure justice for the family. Trade union giants and alliance partners Cosatu have sent their ‘heartfelt condolences’ to those affected.

SACP Western Cape secretary, Benson Ngqentsu has told the media that they are encouraging the police to take swift action, and wouldn’t be drawn on any speculation linked to the killing. Police are yet to establish a motive for the crime, and it’s not known if political allegiances were a factor.

“As the South African Communist Party, we refuse to speculate because if we speculate, then we will be narrowing the scope for investigation. The police must act swiftly in investigating the murder.”
