Bacon & Cherry Skewers – Start your next braai the right way
It’s always braai-season in South Africa, but as summer approaches quickly, the frequency of going to or hosting a daytime braai is going up. A braai is also not just one meal, its a day of eating. Some food is grilled on a hot fire and other meat is finished a bit later when its cooled down a bit. Every braai also needs snacks, be it cooked or fresh. These Bacon & Cherry Skewers or bacon & cherry sosaties are a staple among many South African families as a snack before the real eating begins.
These delicious treats also have the name “oopsies” because the cherries can fall into the fire, so be careful when you handle them. You can also put them in a “flip grill” which you can close around these beauties to make handling them easier. Also, if you have reusable steel skewers, you are more than welcome to use those as well. Make sure to keep the syrup from the maraschino cherry jar to pour some of it over the sosaties (skewers) just as they are done to add that extra sweet taste. Bacon always goes well with something sweet.
You have your Bacon & Cherry Skewers recipe ready. Now it’s time to plan the rest of your summer braai meals and have a traditional South African feast.
