Lockdown millionaire: One lucky winner scoops R135m Powerball jackpot

Someone in South Africa has woken up with a nine-figure bonanza in their back pocket, after playing the Powerball on Tuesday. The enormous R135 million jackpot is the biggest win of its kind for quite a while, and it has made a multi-millionaire out of an unsuspecting citizen. What a way to spend your lockdown…

Powerball jackpot winner is R135 million better off

One player matched five numbers and the Powerball to scoop the jackpot, whereas another participant will be R300 000 better off – they also matched five numbers, but missed out on that all-important Powerball.

On Wednesday 5 February, a lucky Johannesburg resident won R114m – R114 580 902.70 to be exact – in the Powerball draw. The winning ticket was bought in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, at Victor and Son Corner Cafe. The main prize hadn’t been won for almost three months before Tuesday’s big giveaway.

Winning numbers for Tuesday 28 April:

  • PowerBall: 06, 12, 32, 36, 45 Powerball: 04
  • PowerBall Plus: 09, 18, 37, 39, 48 Powerball: 04

Is it legal to play Powerball during lockdown

Lotto and Powerball are not essential services, as highlighted by the Trade Minister. According to a statement published by the National Lottery Commission (NLC): “The sale of National Lottery tickets at retail terminals is prohibited during the national lockdown.” It did not explain why the NLC had earlier claimed to have an “exemption” allowing Lottery ticket sales to continue.

Although the minister addressed the prohibition on the sale of lottery tickets in general, it is clear from the statement that the NLC plans to only halt sales at retail outlets and to allow online ticket sales. As it stands, you are still allowed to play digitally. But make sure you’re playing by the rules – no-one wants to win millions and then have their jackpot invalidated because they ignored lockdown directives.
