Look: Winter arrives early as snow turns parts of Southern Africa into winter wonderland
While we are waiting for South Africa’s first snow of 2021 to arrive next week, the first dusting has already been spotted in Lesotho. See the breathtaking images here.
Ventusky reported earlier this week that South Africa could receive up to six centimetres – a “decent amount”, according to the forecast – next week, especially along the Drakensberg Mountain Range on the Lesotho border.
Snow forecast for Southern Africa
The first snow has already fallen in Lesotho along the Sani Pass on 28 March 2021. One resident in the area said “everything is definitely getting cooler, the light here has completely changed as well
“Late to rise and early to dip, very different from the last few months. Winter is on her way, a little early”.
In addition, AfriSki said on social media:
“Scenes at Afriski this morning after snow fell throughout the evening. Winter has come early this year!”
Where will it snow in South Africa?
While Lesotho will get the bulk of the icy weather, several areas in South Africa will be getting a covering as well – including the northern parts of the Eastern Cape. Afriski shared the first images of snow along the Lesotho border.
AfriSki confirmed that roads are currently still open to all vehicles. We also reported yesterday that the corridor between Craddock and Queenstown will receive a flurry. Furthermore, Tom Head explains:
“This slightly less rural region may get up to three centimetres, and although it’s not a huge amount, put it this way: It’ll be enough to take a pretty picture!”
