Just in: Third person confirmed dead after Melville shooting

It’s been reported that a third person has succumbed to their injuries from the Melville shooting. Two female victims – aged between 30 and 40 – had already been confirmed dead at the scene. Six others were rushed to hospital for further treatment. But one of the patients has since tragically passed away.

Johannesburg in shock

An eyewitness also told Newzroom Afrika that there was an altercation before the drive-by shooting. He claims that the incident looked like a revenge mission, suggesting that two DJs at the club were injured in the gunfire. Police are yet to verify this version of events:

The death toll across Johannesburg stands at three, despite shootings in two other locations. Another serious incident took place in Mary Fitzgerald Square during the New Year celebrations.

At least 11 people have been injured in the west of Johannesburg, and four male victims are receiving hospital treatment for their serious injuries. With reports of shots fired in Doornfontein, the number of casualties has reached 19. At around 3:00, partygoers were systematically picked-off by a shooter who had assumed a vantage point on the M2 double-decker bridge.

The Gauteng Government have since made a statement on a haunting night of violence, but unfortunately, no perpetrators have been caught as of 13:45 on Wednesday.

In a nutshell: Melville shooting explained

  • The shooters are the subject of a huge manhunt. Extra services and officers are now working this case
  • It’s not known how many people were involved in the Melville shooting, but the perps were driving a BMW SUV.
  • They committed this atrocious crime outside Poppy’s, a restaurant on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 7th Street. Gunfire was heard at 1:00, as they committed a drive-by before making their escape.
  • These thugs will now facing three charges of murder – and five of attempted murder – if and when they’re apprehended.
  • It’s believed that this particular part of Melville is well monitored by CCTV cameras. It is likely that a clearer picture of the suspects can be created and shared with the public within the next 48 hours.
