SABC host suspended for ‘inappropriately touching female colleague’
SABC has moved to suspend one of its hosts, after he was the subject of a serious complaint made by a female employee at the station. Rams Mabote, who fronts the Media and Society show on Sunday mornings, has been accused of ‘inappropriately touching’ his colleague – but he strenuously denies any wrongdoing.
Who is Rams Mabote, and what is he accused of?
Mabote also runs the Young Kings organisation, which aims to alleviate high levels of gender-based violence in South Africa by teaching young men to respect women. Supporters of the presenter say that the accusations levelled against him are ‘out of character’, but SABC is taking the grievance very seriously.

SABC host suspended for touching colleague, channel responds
Mabote himself is yet to respond to the allegations, but was Tweeting about other issues on Thursday afternoon. We understand that the reporter is protesting his innocence behind the scenes, and maintains that any act of ‘inappropriate touching’ is an absolute misunderstanding.
SABC has briefly addressed the situation, without giving too much away. Discussions will now take place between the broadcaster and the employees involved in this unfortunate incident. Meanwhile, Media and Society will be fronted by a stand-in presenter when it airs at 9:00 on Sunday 29 August.
“We are due to discuss the matter and or incident during the coming week and we shall communicate the outcomes soonest. May I assure you that the matter is receiving urgent attention, and it is worth noting that we shall engage the services of a stand-in presenter until the finalisation of the matter.”
