Jab incentives: These ‘rewards’ are now available for vaccinated SA citizens

As South Africa’s attempt to immunise the country against COVID-19 escalates, those who do choose to get vaccinated now have a set of ‘rewards’ they can claim – and more businesses are looking to offer ‘jab incentives’.

Food outlets, insurance companies, and even private citizens in Mzansi have launched schemes in the past week, which look to motivate vaccine-hesitant citizens into taking the plunge. Around 25% of South Africans have expressed their concerns about getting the COVID-19 shots, and it’s hoped that more people can be swayed by these offers.

  • Dr Marina Joubert, a researcher at Stellenbosch University, believes incentives are a good idea:

“Personally, I would say, especially in the South African situation, I don’t see any problem making going for a vaccine a positive experience like giving people a warm cup of coffee or even a nutritious meal while they’re waiting. But government officials also need to focus on implementing more effective science communication.” | Dr. Joubert

The first rewards available for vaccinated South Africans:

Cheaper insurance premiums as ‘jab incentives’

Discovery became the first business in South Africa to dip its toes into the waters of vaccine rewards. They confirmed last week that any client applying for a new premium will have their vaccination status taken into account, offering discounted deals and money-back schemes for jabbed citizens.

“For all new clients who take up one of our qualifying life plans, a benefit will be offered to recognise the value of vaccinations in reducing risk. And all clients who have been vaccinated or commit to being vaccinated can get up to 100% in premium PayBack accumulation – at the first anniversary of their new policy.”

Free coffees for the vaccinated

Wimpy is the first food outlet to incentivise vaccine uptake in South Africa. Anyone who has received their inoculation can grab a free filter coffee from any of their restaurants – as long as it’s within 48 hours of their booking. Those hoping to redeem this offer must also bring their vaccination card with them.

“Now that vaccines are being administered to citizens aged 35 years and up Wimpy is hoping to create enthusiasm to curb the virus. If you’re helping South Africa overcome this pandemic by receiving your COVID-19 vaccine, come and enjoy every moment and have a coffee on us,”

Jacques Cronje, Marketing Executive for Wimpy

Vaccine raffles – offering everything from meat and wine, to tupperware and airtime

Take a bow, Jolene Samuels. After organising a ‘vaccine raffle’ for her friends on Facebook, the idea blew-up in a big way. Samuels, who has been praised by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde for her own personal incentive, now holds frequent competitions on her social media channels – offering a wide range of prizes for those who brave the needle.
