The Egyptian giants, coached by Pitso Mosimane, are playing catch-up in the Egyptian Premier League having missed several rounds of competition due to their CAF Champions League commitments.

Al Ahly were looking to bounce back from a disappointing last outing in which they were held 2-2 by Pyramids.

In a frantic period immediately prior to half-time, Al Ahly scored three goals through Mohamed Sherif (40th minute), Hussein El-Sahat (42nd minute) and a penalty by Ali Maaloul (45th minute)

Sherif picked up his second of the match in the 58th minute to give Mosimane’s side all three points.

The win moved Al Ahly to second place in the Egyptian Premier League table with 45 points from 21 matches, closing the gap between them and Zamalek who sit top with 61 points from 27 games.

Zamalek lead by 16 points but have played six more matches.

At this stage it’s a case of what would you rather have: points in the bank or matches outstanding?

Meanwhile, despite their defeat Smouha remained in fourth place with 40 points from 28 matches.

The Red Devils will next be in action in two away matches, starting with Thursday, 8 July’s trip to 14th-placed Al Mokawloon (21:00 SA time) before they take on Misr Lel Makkasa on Saturday, 11 July (17:00 SA time).

Misr Lel Makkasa are 10th in the 18-team strong league.

Al Ahly’s next BIG match is of course against Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Champions League final on Saturday, 17 July in Casablanca, Morocco.
