Rare ‘Level 8 weather warnings’ issued for SA, winds up to 140km/h forecast

If you’re anywhere near the West Coast and the respective capes on Wednesday, you’ll have to heed the weather warnings issued by SAWS. That’s because a lesser-seen Level 8 alert is in place for some regions during the remainder of the day, and gale-force winds are expected to reach tremendous speeds.

What is a Level 8 weather warning?

Gusts of 100km/h are set to hit three provinces – the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and Western Cape – with that number possibly rising to 140km/h in Namakwa District and the WC interior.

All coastal regions between Saldanha and Alexander Bay also remain on high alert. The weather warnings follow an intense period of rain of plummeting temperatures.

A Level 8 warning comes into place when the threat of severe damage to property and infrastructure rises. SAWS has made no bones about just how devastating these winds could be on Wednesday, stating that the extreme conditions carry a ‘possible danger to human life’ – largely due to flying debris.

Terrible winds, dangerous seas, and more rain…

Townships and informal settlements are also at the mercy of the wild weather, as disruption to essential services is likely. Meanwhile, drivers of high-sided and larger vehicles have been cautioned about the possibility of ‘crosswinds’, which have the potential to flip these HGVs over. The N1, N7, and N14 have been identified as roads requiring high vigilance.

The seas are also in disarray, from Cape Agulhas right round to Port Nolloth: High water levels, dangerous waves, and choppy conditions that could cause ships to ‘break anchor’ are all on the cards for the day ahead. For those of you affected by these weather warnings, it is imperative to exercise your diligence.
