Just in: South Africa adds 8881 new COVID-19 cases

South Africa recorded 8881 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, 9 June, which is more than double the cases recorded on the previous day, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). Gauteng was the province most affected by the spike in cases.

8881 NEW COVID-19 CASES DETECTED – THIRD WAVE IMMINENT

The NICD said the 8881 new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 53 732 new tests, representing a test positivity rate of 16.5%. The institute wished to stress that the new cases were not a logistical or technical issue but a sign of the incoming third wave. There are 66 128 active cases in South Africa, as of Wednesday.

“The increased number of tests and cases, and increased positivity rate are evidence of the predicted third surge in COVID-19 cases, and not artifacts of data loading or increased laboratory turn-around times,” said the NICD.

The majority of the new cases detected on Wednesday are from Gauteng, which added 5 111 cases, accounting for 58% of all new cases. The Western Cape followed with 783 cases (9%).

Hospitals are getting fuller with 1150 new patients admitted in the past 24 hours. Gauteng, again, was the most affected province with 587 new admissions. There are currently 7194 patients admitted to, both, public and private hospitals across the country. An additional 135 people succumbed to the disease in the past 24 hours, according to the NICD.
