Ag pleez Deddy take us to the drive-in: Sandton City launches rooftop cinema
Following on from the success of the pop-up drive-in at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, Sandton City now boasts Joburg’s latest drive-in.
Ster-Kinekor is now screening films on Sandton City’s rooftop, where movie fans can enjoy films from the comfort of their cars.
DRIVE-IN MAKES A COMEBACK
Drive-ins were fashionable in a bygone era but due to the need for social distancing brought on by the global pandemic, they are making a comeback.
Not quite as big as the city’s former Velskoen Drive-in (in Randburg) or Topstar Drive-in (perched on top of a disused gold mine), Joburg’s newest drive-in is located in the centre of Sandton.
The City Drive-In located on the rooftop parking at Sandton City, can be accessed off Sandton Drive, and offers individuals and families an opportunity to safely enjoy big-screen entertainment from the comfort of their own vehicles.
“Sandton City is thrilled to be the owner of The City Drive-In and to present this monumental addition to the public,” said Sandton City general manager Preston Gaddy.
BLOCKBUSTER FILMS ON THE BIG SCREEN
According to Goodthingsguy, Sandton City’s new drive-in will screen a selection of films, from modern classics to new releases and other favourites. There is something for everyone at Joburg’s new drive-in, which will screen Ster-Kinekor movies including Frozen, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Greatest Showman among others.
City Drive-in will open on Friday 4 June, with the highly anticipated new release, Godzilla vs Kong being screened on launch night. Viewers will be able to watch some of the greatest blockbusters on the big screen four times a week at City Drive-In.
The facility will operate from Thursday to Sunday, until 31 July 2021. There will be two screenings per day on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays will offer matinée screenings which are suitable for the whole family.
CITY DRIVE-IN’S COVID-19 SAFETY MEASURES
Mask-wearing outside of vehicles is compulsory for all attendees. Physical distancing must also be practised, with patrons standing at least two metres apart. Sanitising stations are strategically located throughout The City Drive-In.
“The City Drive-In is a great differentiator for the property and offers customers the opportunity to engage in a shared entertainment experience, from the safety and comfort of a controlled, socially distant space.” Gaddy said.
Sandton City requests viewers to arrive early and park their cars before purchasing or collecting their refreshments from Ster-Kinekor’s onsite tuckshop. Patrons are invited to sit back, relax and get comfortable in their vehicles before the feature film begins.
