After a poor performance and a waste of the possession advantage they enjoyed in the first half, the substitutions Mosimane made at half-time bore fruit when Taher Mohamed’s stunner gave them the lead after 57 minutes.

However, his goal wasn’t enough as a late header from former Al Ahly star Mohamed Naguib ensured the spoils were shared.

The draw with El Gouna was the fourth for Al Ahly this season with the setback keeping the defending champions in second place in the league table with 37 points and two games in hand over log leaders Zamalek on 40 points.

According to the KingFut website, Pitso Mosimane started the press conference following the match by saying: “We lost two new points.

“Among the matches we played recently, this match was by far our lowest performance. We did not perform with the intensity required for a match like that.

“The first half was like training. We possessed the ball. We did not try to score. We were supposed to go forward and try to score goals, and in the second half we tried.

“Against Zamalek, we did not give them a chance to play, today we gave El Gouna the chance.

“I cannot talk about fatigue because we made substitutions. Four new players participated in the match.

“But with the participation of the fatigued players, the intensity of our performance increased.

“I do not make excuses, the match today was like training, it was not like a match, we tied and we were punished.”

Regarding the accusation of retreating into a defensive mode, Pitso Mosimane angrily replied: “I have involved Salah Mohsen and Afsha. Are these defensive substitutions? The only defensive substitution was Mohamed Hany.

When asked about resting Afsha and Amr El-Sulya, he replied: “Some will ask why I rested this player or that player, but I rested them because they feel very tired and I have given the opportunity to other players such as Kahraba and Nasser Maher.”

“Any technical failure, I bear, and we were supposed to end the match in the first half, but we did not do it,” he added.

Al Ahly will next be in action away to 11th-placed Ghazi El Mahalla on Monday, 3 May at 21:30 SA time.
