Keshav Maharaj excited by new Proteas captains Bavuma and Elgar

Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj has congratulated both Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma for their appointments as national team captains.

Bavuma will captain the Proteas in one-day and T20 International formats while Elgar will lead the side in test cricket, and Maharaj knows exactly what the pair will be bringing into the team.

What makes Maharaj excited about the appointment of Bavuma is his qualities, and he’s confident the diminutive batsman will take the Proteas to greater heights.

“I am really happy for Dean and Temba,” said Maharaj to SA Cricket Magazine.

“Themba has shown his qualities in one-day format and T20 format for the Lions and that’s why they picked up a trophy. I am sure he will take the Proteas to greater heights,” he added.

A fighter and a gutsy character! That’s how Maharaj described Elgar, and the spinner is banking on his new test captain to instill energy and character to his teammates.

“Dean has been a long-serving citizen of South African cricket at the top of the order. He’s a fighter, he’s a gutsy character,” continued Maharaj

“His energy and his character might be something different towards the test environment. Maybe it’s something we need to kick on for higher orders in test cricket,” concluded Maharaj.
