Community members host pothole fishing competition in KZN [photos]
Curry’s Post Conservancy recently hosted what is believed to be the world’s first pothole fishing competition near Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.
Hosting the world’s first pothole fishing competition
The competition was the brainchild of Curry’s Post Conservancy member Kemsley Wood who among other community members wanted to highlight the road that is ridden with potholes. The members ultimately asked for a donation of R20 per fishing rod on the day and that people take to social media to share what they are doing. The community also stepped in and offered some prizes for those who enter – like the bggest fishing rod, smallest fishing rod, most unique “catch” and best social media post.
“As a community, we initiated a Curry’s Post Conservancy clean-up project. We wanted to employ local staff to clean the road, pick up the litter and cut the verges, generally tidy up the spot,” said Wood according to TimesLive. “We needed funds to do that so I came up with the idea of a pothole fishing competition.”
Wood said the community was keen to pitch in to clean up their surroundings.
“We can’t wait for the municipality to do stuff. We’ve got to do stuff ourselves where we can in terms of tidying up. Unfortunately fixing potholes is out of our expertise. You can’t have amateurs doing professionals jobs.”
Raising awareness
Wood said that although they were not necessarily too successful in raising funds, they were still able to raise awareness. He is not sure if the municapilty will decide to step in though.
“We are not sure. It is early days. We’ve had no engagement with uMngeni municipality. Hopefully this will make things happen,” Wood said further.
Meanwhile, an Umgeni Municipality spokesperson Thando Mgaga labelled the protest as a “DA stunt” and a “blatant mockery” of people who had lost their jobs due to COVID-19.
A sinkhole vacation
Over the festive season, a resident in Fourways in Johannesburg decided to take his vacation in his own hands by taking a swim in a sinkhole/pothole outside of his house. The sinkhole, which quickly went viral, has now been dubbed the Fourways Beach. The resident, who previously did a spoof of My Octopus Teacher, was seen with his pink flamingo, and his tub of HTH which definitely brought the festive cheer and laughs back to Fourways after lockdown regulations on various beaches and lakes over South Africa were implemented by the government earlier in December.
