Android app crashes: How to fix the issue if your apps are still bugging out

An unexpected error caused certain Android apps to crash for users of the Google-owned operating system across the world on Tuesday 23 March. The internet giant, however, solved the problem after a few hours.

The error was caused by the Android System WebView component, according to tech outlet The Verge. The component allows Android apps to display web content. To resolve the issue, Google released a fix.

If your Android apps are still crashing you need to update your device’s ‘WebView’ to version 89.0.4389.105 and the mobile Google Chrome browser to the latest version. Both updates are available via the Google Play store.

The issue lasted for approximately seven hours on Tuesday. Google issued an update via its Workspace dashboard for Gmail in the wee hours of the morning at 1:05, which indicated that they are aware that a subset of users is unable to access Gmail.

“Affected users are reporting the Gmail app on Android crashes,” said the company.

At 8:18, Google reported that the issue had been resolved and stated that the updating devices with the requisite fixes should “resolve the issue” for all users.

“The problem with Gmail has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better,” reported the company via the dashboard.

Prior to the update, savvy users had figured out their own way to resolve the issue by removing the latest update of the WebView system component. These are exactly the steps that Samsung’s support Twitter account recommended to users who complained about the issue.
