Kaizer Chiefs equal unwanted record but it’s NOT the worst

Kaizer Chiefs failed to beat Horoya AC in their opening Group C match of the CAF Champions League as both sides played to a 0-0 draw at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

In so doing, Amakhosi stretched their winless run to seven matches across all competitions; an unwanted record Gavin Hunt will want to improve sooner rather than later.

In 2016, Chiefs went seven games without a ‘real’ win when Mpumalanga Black Aces’ last-minute equalizer denied them victory in that 2-2 league draw.

However, at the time, Chiefs were handed victory on a silver platter after Volcan de Moroni had to forfeit their CAF Champions League match for failing to honour the fixture in Durban.

This was the case again in 2017 with Steve Komphela again in charge of the Soweto giants.

Their seventh game without a win came in September 2017 when the played to a 1-1 draw against Hunt’s former team, Bidvest Wits at FNB Stadium.

Now, Chiefs last won a competitive match over a month ago when they beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) 3-0 on January 19, 2021.

They have since recorded four draws and suffered three defeats, including a 2-1 Nedbank Cup loss to minnows Richards Bay earlier this month.

While this is an unwanted record by Amakhosi’s standards, it is still NOT their worst!

Their joint-worst winless run came during the 2001-02 season when they went nine matches without tasting victory.

At the time, Muhsin Ertugral was the coach, and had just delivered the African Cup Winners’ Cup trophy. He was subsequently sacked.

That unwanted record would be equalled by Komphela in December 2014 as Chiefs were held to a 0-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic in the league.

Ironically, Komphela served as Ertugral’s assistant in his first season at Chiefs.

So, Hunt is two games away from becoming only Amakhosi’s third coach to go nine competitive games without a win since the inception of the PSL in 1996.
