Listen to the Daily News Wrap, Thursday 24 December
It’s Christmas eve, Thursday 24 December 2020, and this is the Daily New Wrap – where we bring you all the news you really need to know.
Bheki Cele has had an eventful month. Fresh from getting into arguments on the beaches of Cape Town, the police minister has now changed course – and he’s encouraging police officers to use ‘lethal force’ when dealing with hardened criminals. It’s probably not the cheeriest of Christmas messages.
Minister Cele is currently on a whistle-stop tour across South Africa, as part of the ‘Safer Festive Season’ initiative. In the past 48 hours, he has visited Kimberley and Port Elizabeth – taking the opportunity to dole out some bizarre advice.
If you’re 12 times over the drink-drive limit, it’s a miracle if you can even keep your eyes open – let alone operate a lorry. But this Gauteng trucker has landed himself in some serious trouble, after he hit the bottle ridiculously hard before getting behind the wheel of his HGV. Local authorities are far from impressed.
