Can mysterious Dubai money help keep WP’s Springboks in the Cape?

Cash-strapped WP Rugby may have received a lifeline from a largely unknown Dubai source.

According to the Rapport newspaper, an investment from an unnamed Dubai-based company may go a long way to ensuring a host of Western Province’s Springboks extend their contracts in the Cape.

The majority of WP Rugby’s high profile players come off their contracts after the scheduled British & Irish Lions tour in July-August this year.

Those players include skipper Siya Kolisi.

Rapport went on to state that thanks to the investment, the union has offered its senior players “lucrative” contracts going forward.

However, with doubts over the new money, none of the players have as yet put pen to paper.

The report went on to state that headline team and stadium sponsors, DHL, are also waiting to see which players stay – and leave – before extending their sponsorship.

WP Rugby are searching for additional revenue streams. Recent negotiations with American consortium MVM Holdings amounted to nothing as an agreement couldn’t be reached.

Weeks later, MVM Holdings took a majority share in the Sharks.
