WhatsApp to roll out ‘low data mode’ for iOS13
iPhone users will be glad to hear that WhatsApp is rolling out a low date mode for all devices operating on the iOS 13. Unfortunately, dark mode is still in development.
It is recommended to always back up your chat history before updating to a new version. If there is something wrong with the update, your messages are safe in the cloud and you can simply restore your chats.
These new changes will be included in the official 2.20.10, which will be rolled out to app stores in due course. Here’s what you need to know.
WhatsApp update 2.20.10
Bugs repaired
The new update address several bugs raised through the beta program. For example, WhatsApp implemented a redesigned footer in some parts of the app.
Due to this, the splash screen didn’t appear for some users. The Beta-testing team confirmed that the issue was addressed, but pointed out that some users may still experience issues with the splash screen.
Low data mode for iOS 13
When the low data mode is enabled, apps that are compatible with this feature will reduce the amount of their network data usage. According to the beta testing team:
“Being fully compatible with iOS 13, WhatsApp now supports Low Data Mode automatically if you have enabled this option in your iPhone Settings.”
Simply enable this feature and WhatsApp will automatically stop all media downloads, even if you have configured different auto-download settings.
Audio downloads paused
As an added benefit, Low Data Mode will also prevent voice messages from auto-downloading, a feature that many users will be grateful for.
Contacts integration and chat badges
iPhone users on iOS13 will be able to share items directly with some suggested WhatsApp contacts, using a new “iOS share sheet.” You’ll also have the options of copying the link or opening in Safari.
In addition, the WhatsApp team addressed a tiny bug: the chat badge for having more than 999 messages displayed incorrectly. I’m not sure who has more than 999 unread messages, but that’s probably a topic for another day.
WhatsApp has now modified the limitation of the chat badge, showing 999+ when there are more than 999 messages.
Dark theme
Users are getting agitated with the delay of the dark theme release. WhatsApp is still working on the new feature. Even though the beta test team doesn’t have a date of release yet, they assume it “might be very soon”.
Some beta testers can, however, see a preview of the Dark theme when they share an image from their camera roll, as per this image shared by WABeta Info.
