Kelly Khumalo breaks silence on Senzo Meyiwa – and she’s ‘lawyered-up’

A lawyer representing Kelly Khumalo has released a statement on behalf of the singer – after she was revealed to be someone the NPA is looking to investigate further in the Senzo Meyiwa case. The former Bafana Bafana captain was gunned down in 2014, while he was in a relationship with Khumalo.

Who killed Senzo Meyiwa?

However, suspicion has dogged the artist ever since: She’s been accused of having ‘insider knowledge’ about the killing, and those allegations blew up even further this week – a leaked NPA document stated that the firm wanted access to Kelly Khumalo’s cell-phone records, claiming that she was in contact with one of the five newly-arrested suspects.

A law firm owned by former Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) treasurer-general Magdalene Moonsamy has taken on Khumalo as a client, as the musician bids to clear her name. In a statement released on Saturday evening, Moonsamy reiterated that Meyiwa’s former partner ‘is not a suspect’, and she believes the incriminating file was ‘leaked maliciously’:

“Our client notes the recent developments of which at this sad time allowed her the opportunity to remain private in the best interest of herself and children especially that of the daughter she has with Mr. Meyiwa. We wish to place it on record that our client is not implicated nor charged in this matter and is therefore not a suspect.”

“We note that the so-called ‘leaked document’, has been leaked with malicious intentions and urge that neither individual nor other parties interrupt in the process of the investigation being undertaken by the police. We further note that our client has been subject to years of harassment and innuendos regarding this matter.”

“She has remained resilient and committed to her contribution to the discourse of contributing to the development and excellence in the South African music industry as a national asset. Our client appreciates the South African public including the continent and the world for their continued support and strength provided to her and her children at this trying time.”
