DStv to pay homage to female heroes and leaders this week

This Sunday, 9 August 2020, marks the 25th commemoration of the 1956 march of women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. DStv’s line-up of movies and shows this week pays homage to the dynamic, enigmatic and complex female heroes and leaders both on and off-screen.

Here are seven of the biggest female-led ‘moments’ on DStv in the week of 7 to 13 August.

Michelle Payne in Ride Like a Girl (Family)

Saturday, 8 August on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 15:15

An inspirational biography of Australian jockey Michelle Payne that proves that anything men can do, women can too. The film follows Payne (played by Australian actress, writer, model, and film producer Teresa Palmer), who through perseverance, hard work and more than a couple of obstacles became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup – despite odds of 100 to 1.

Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson in Bombshell (Drama)

Sunday, 9 August on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 20:05

Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman are fierce as Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson – their on-screen counterparts on this Sunday-night blockbuster. Kelly and Carlson are American journalists and news anchors who aim to expose the sexual harassment of female employees at the Fox News media empire. Based on a true story, not only do these women show the strength to endure anything thrown at them but their vulnerability endears us to them until the very end.

Princess Jasmine in Aladdin (Family)

Saturday, 8 August on M-Net Movies Smile (DStv Channel 105) at 19:00

Princesses can be fiercely independent too – just ask Naomi Scott’s Jasmine in this modern remake of the classic tale. The film was acclaimed for its strong themes of feminism and female independence and empowerment, fitting for the milestone Women’s Day weekend. Also starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud, Scott easily steals the show portraying a princess we can all look up to in this primetime family movie.

Phiona Mutesi in Queen of Katwe (Sports Drama)

Sunday, 9 August on BET (DStv Channel 129) at 21:00

This inspirational story gives us not one but two female role models to look up to. Phiona Mutesi’s smarts and desire to become more are admirable qualities while the film’s star Lupita Nyong’o, who hails from Kenya, shows us that Africa has no shortage of world-class talent.

Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid (Action)

Sunday, 9 August on TNT (DStv Channel 137) at 18:15

Hilary Swank’s character (Julie Pierce) is a strong contender for the spotlight in this Nineties throwback. Not only does Julie Pierce find her inner warrior but she does so in the best Nineties fashion – without a care to what others thought.

Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil in G.I. Jane (Action)

Sunday, 9 August on TNT (DStv Channel 137) at 20:00

“I’m not interested in being some poster girl for women’s rights”, says G.I. Jane’s titular character but that did not stop her from becoming an inspirational figure for an entire generation of girls battling the odds for what they want. Classic in every sense of the word and starring the talented Demi Moore, the film’s message can still be felt today, as we see a female Senator succeed in enrolling a woman into Navy SEALS training where everyone expects her to fail.
