Perfect for the weekend: Rustic beef potjie recipe

There is nothing better than an open fire and making a potjie. Its the perfect treat with your friends and family or for a birthday celebration.

This is a very easy to make potjie will make you the next potjie champion in your neighbourhood.

    Ingredients

    • 1 kg beef shin

    • 2 large onions

    • 2 crushed garlic cloves

    • 3 chopped carrots

    • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced

    • 1 red or green pepper

    • 2 teaspoons mixed herbs

    • 30 ml oil

    • 750 ml hot water

    • 1 teaspoon sugar

    • 15 ml vinager

    • 2 teaspoon barbeque spice

    • 100 ml tomato sauce

    • 50 ml cream

    Method

    • Place your size 3/4 tripod potjie over hot coals, or gas potjie stand.
    • Heat the oil. Add the onions, peppers and garlic. Fry them till soft. Remove from the pot and set aside.
    • Add the meat to the pot and brown. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • When the meat is browned, add 500ml of the hot water to your pot. Cover the lid and simmer for 30 minutes.
    • Add the chopped vegetables.
    • Mix the rest of the ingredients, except the cream, with the remaining 250ml hot water. Add to your pot. Close the lid.
    • Simmer for 25 minutes. Do not stir the pot.
    • Remove from the heat, add the fried onions/peppers and add the cream.
    • Serve with rice or samp.
