Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Akumu spotted at FNB Stadium
Kenyan midfielder Anthony Akumu was spotted in the stands during Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 win over Highlands Park at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
Chiefs used the fixture as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations giving away thousands of tickets to ensure a festive atmosphere and one man got a taste of what it means to be one of the Glamour Boys.
Akumu spotted in the stands at the FNB Stadium
Akumu has been heavily linked with a move to Naturena and last week he was released by Zambian superclub ZESCO United.
Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be battling the likes of TP Mazembe and Simba SC, but Amakhosi seem to have the inside track at the moment.
The club’s head coach Ernst Middendorp has refused to rule out a move for the talented Kenyan playmaker while Kaizer Motaung has fuelled rumours suggesting that the table-toppers had a target they hoped to sign in early January.
“As you know it’s another window period‚ and obviously there might be an opportunity for us to acquire one position. If it succeeds‚ it will happen in the next two weeks or so‚” Motaung said in an interview with Timeslive.
Akumu’s Instagram stories from Wednesday night featured images captured at the FNB Stadium suggesting his signing is now imminent.
Kaizer Chiefs transfer blunders
Chiefs are rumoured to be attempting to release Ghanain midfielder James Kotei to free up a foreign player slot in their registered squad. Kotei is yet to play a competitive game for the Glamour Boys after moving from Simba SC at the start of the season. The 26-year-old joined on a free but Kaizer Chiefs have had to fork out five months wages to a player they released the promising Andriamirado Andrianarimanana to sign.
Kotei arrived as part of a massive overhaul of the Amakhosi squad after a disappointing 2018/19 season but unlike his fellow new signings Samir Nurkovic and Kearyn Baccus he has not been afforded the opportunity to impress for the first team.
Akumu started his professional career with Gor Mahia FC of Nairobi before moving to Khartoum Club in Sudan in January of 2015. He spent just a year at the club before joining ZESCO where he played for four years, turning out in both Caf continental competitions.
The 27-year-old defensive midfielder has played 31 international matches for Kenya since making his debut against Sudan in 2011. He has not played for his country since 2018.
