Upington floods: Heavy rainfall drenches drought-hit NC town [video]

Upington has been been blessed with the sight of gushing floods. While the dangers of high precipitation levels lingered, residents of the Northern Cape town were more thankful for finally getting heavy rainfall after a long period of drought.

Upington floods: What’s the latest?

The South African Weather Service (Saws) had warned of thunderstorms and torrential rains in Upington for the most parts of Thursday.

However, the last thing locals expected was the flurry of heavy rainfall that drenched the town. The rain was surely needed but the floods also carried the threat of affecting businesses, sweeping cars away and exposing minors to the dangers of drowning.

Alas, the potential troubles that came with the rain were less of a concern than the prospects it held for Upington and the metro’s vulnerable water reserves.

This sentiment was shared by locals who took to social media, posting images and videos captioned with praises that the skies finally opened up and allowed rain to — at last — fall on the drought-stricken land.

Update on damages caused by floods

The flooding has caused its damage to people’s homes and businesses. However, this setback has not been the central focus for the people of Upington.

Unlike in KwaZulu-Natal, where torrential conditions swept houses and vehicles away, taking lives along with it, the wet weather was welcomed in the Northern Cape town.

If anything, residents were disappointed that the flooding would not persist.

Weather forecast for Friday, 6 December

Accoridng to the readings published by the weather observers, the torrential conditions were only passing. While most parts of the Northern Cape are expected to be cloudy, light-to-moderate showers are expected in Upington and Kimberley, on Friday.
