Sibu Mpanza, thesouthafrican.com’s resident YouTuber, is back for another weekly news roundup. He brings a much needed comic twist to some of the biggest headlines of the week, from Black Friday 2019 and MetroRail to the former president’s private quarters.
Dust off your sense of humour, you’re going to need it for this week’s news round-up. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Let’s take a look at some of the top stories this week.
Sibu Mpanza’s round-up of TSA’s top stories this week
Black Friday in South Africa
“The popular holiday started in America in the 1960s, and like Starbucks and racism, we’ve adopted it. It’s way worse in Cape Town, though.”

Game stores were packed, Cape Town taxi owners slashed prices and consumers queued for hours just to be the first ones in when the doors open. It was a rush, it really was. We collected some of the best video clips over here. Even Gun Friendly SA had a sale on gun accessories.
Nkandla made headlines once again
This time, it wasn’t for filling a second “firepool” or “making helipad adjustments,” Sibu informs us. No, Nkandla made the news after a fence collapse. Of course, it raised concerns about the state of security at the former president’s residence.
Zuma’s spokesperson set the record straight by confirming that the photo shared in the media was not that of the Zuma’s private residence, but the “wider municipality of Nkandla”. Breathe easy again, the former president is still safe.
“Everybody calm down, he is safe. He has enough people minding his private quarters…”

MetroRail blazing
MetroRail train carriages were ravaged by a blaze in the early hours of Thursday morning 28 November 2019, causing destruction to more than half of Cape Town’s fleet. The damages add up to about R500m.
It was reported as yet another arson attack and the fire impacted the morning peak service, which forced operators to suspend the service. MetroRail has lost at least 45 carriages since 2017.
