Municipal elections: IEC pleased with voter registration turn out

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is satisfied with the number of people who registered to vote this past weekend.

According to the IEC, 598 000 registrations were recorded on Saturday while on Sunday morning – an additional 29 305 were picked up.

Various political parties were on the campaign trail all over the country this weekend – less than two months before South Africans head to the polls in the Local Government Elections.

“The Commission also reports that only nine of the 23 151 registration stations did not open today. This was mainly because of service delivery protests. The Commission continues to work with the South African Police Service and local leaders to resolve the problems,” IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said on Sunday.

The IEC further noted that more people were making use of its online portal to register and encouraged others to do so.

“The registration weekend has also seen heightened use of the online Voter Portal for registration. So far, 39 519 voters have registered for the elections using the portal, which remains open until midnight tomorrow – 20 September 2021. We encourage South Africans to continue making use of this facility”

IEC: Special votes applications open

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has also announced that the applications for special voting in the Local Government Elections opens on Monday, 20 September 2021.

“We urge South Africans who wish to apply for a special vote to apply online or at the MEO office,” it said.

In other news, the IEC has also reminded South Africans that the nomination of candidates for the municipal elections re-opened and closes on Tuesday, 21 September 2021 at 17:00.

“The Commission thanks South Africans who have come out in their numbers to register and urges those that have not done so to use the last few hours of the registration weekend to register or visit our online portal,” the IEC said.
