It was once again the end result as a well drilled, youthful Blitzboks side did well to put a big, physical yet mobile Kenyan side to the sword in a clinical display from start to finish, that saw them only let their opponents breach their defence en-route to the try line once.

Kenyans were matched physically

The Kenyans showed early intent to use their physical edge and size but were met with their match. The South Africans were on hand to smash any Kenyan attacker back at every possible interval, in a clear statement of their own. It wouldn’t take long for the Blitzboks to start asserting their dominance which resulted in a quick brace for flyer Angelo Davids. Those two tries saw Davids claim a new Canada Sevens try record of 10 at the tournament.

That wouldn’t be enough for this ruthless Blitzboks side who saw East London-born star Sakoyisa Makata on hand to finish off a well worked team try to extend the lead. Not long after that, one of the new brigade Christie Grobbelaar rounded off a stunning tournament with the last try of the half, which saw Neil Powell’s side enter the break with an emphatic 24-0 lead over Kenya

Second half more of the same

The Blitzboks were in no mood to let up in the second half either, with the level of intensity still kept very high. Player of the Final, Ronald Brown went over to score the first points of the half. A yellow card to Dewald Human then gave the Kenyans the opportunity to get their first points of the final but Darren Adonis would then add further gloss to the scoreline with his first try of the Canada Sevens sealing the deal for the South Africans.

Powell expresses delight at Canada Sevens victory

“I’m really proud of the boys, there’s a lot of youngsters who are the next generation of Springboks sevens (Blitzboks) and they’ve done really well.”
