State advocate faces theft charges related to shoplifting
An advocate and suspended head of the Special Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU) in the North West will stand trial to face theft charges relating to an alleged shoplifting incident before the end of this year.
Advocate Jeanette Nevelling, 53, appeared briefly in the Molopo Magistrates Court in the North West on Monday where her trial date was set.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said that Nevelling had appeared briefly in court with her newly appointed legal representative.
Mamothame said her legal representative had told the court that the defence had sent a representation to the office of the national director of public prosecution (NDPP) requesting that the matter not go to trial.
“Advocate Mashudu Mudau who has been sent from the Limpopo Division of the NPA to ensure there was no perceived conflict of interest, indicated to the court that the state is ready to go for trial, pending the decision of the NDPP,” Mamothame said.
Nevelling was arrested on 16 February 2021 on an allegation of shoplifting at a retail shop at The Crossing Shopping Mall in Mmabatho. She allegedly stole clothing and food items valued at approximately R3000.
“She will remain suspended from discharging her duties in the NPA,” Mamothame said.
Mamothame said the court had extended her R500 bail until her next court appearance. The matter has been set down for trial on 3 November in the Molopo Magistrates Court.
