SAPS in Kempton Park, Gauteng moved swiftly to apprehend two suspects who had been “operating a liquor outlet”, despite the blanket ban issued by government. The illegal boozer has since been shut down.

A high volume of alcohol was taken from the scene, which was raided on Monday 29 June following a cross-departmental operation from the police. The makeshift speakeasy wasn’t the only offence to report, either.

One of the men was arrested for selling counterfeit products, as well as being booked with a contravention of the Immigration Act. Both suspects are set to appear in different courts across Gauteng later this week.

Alcohol can only be purchased from licensed stores, from 9:00 – 17:00 from Monday to Thursday during Level 3 of lockdown. No bars or shebeens are allowed to operate, and restaurants cannot serve booze for sit-in meals.

In a recently issued statement, Gauteng SAPS praised the officers for making such a swift arrest. Captain Kay Makhubele revealed that a number of illicit items – including bootleg hard liquor – were discovered at the outlet.
