Irvin Khoza on VAR in the PSL: Why it’s not happening any time soon

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Irvin Khoza says he’s open to the idea of introducing Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) to South African football, but admits the costs might be prohibitive.

Khoza was responding to calls introduce the system following a public and social media outcry over decisions made in the MTN8 quarter-finals this past weekend.

In the most high-profile incident, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune “saved” Lyle Lakay’s (Mamelodi Sundowns) penalty in their shootout – although video replays clearly showed the ball had crossed the line.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene made an incredible four saves to help his side win the match, but was seen coming off his line early for at least three of Kaizer Chiefs’ penalties.

Lastly, Keletso Mkgalwa also had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offsides in Swallows’ defeat of Orlando Pirates.

Irvin Khoza said according to Kickoff: “There are certain elements of the VAR system, one of them are the video assistant referee, virtual offside line and goal-line technology. Now is the issue of phasing it, which comes first.

“Is there issues with goal-line problems we need to address first or is if offsides? But like I said last time it’s a question of doing an audit about the infrastructure. If this VAR is going to be centrally controlled or decentralised.

“There was a discussion about it, obviously in the next joint committee meeting because the issues with referees reside with SAFA but there’s a cost factor that foes with it which must be factored into the discussion.”
