Bongani Zungu La Liga switch reportedly still on the cards!

Bafana Bafana international Bongani Zungu’s move to La Liga may still be on the cards following the end of his loan spell at Rangers.

Zungu spent last season on loan to Rangers

Zungu who spent the previous season in Scotland with Rangers where he helped the Glasgow side win their first league title in a decade under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, had previously been linked with a switch to Spain before.

During the 2019/2020 season’s January transfer window, Zungu had been given permission by his then French Ligue 1 side Amiens to fly over to Spain and undergo a medical with then La Liga side Real Mallorca. The French club, however, made it clear to everyone involved that the deal would ultimately only be allowed to go through in the event that Amiens are able to find a replacement.

Initial La Liga move fell through

In the end it would prove to be a deadline day filled with heartache and disappointment for Zungu who found himself stranded in Spain as his deal to Mallorca eventually fell through at the 11th hour. He had a difficult time coming back and having to readjust his mindset for the rest of the season, and that is perhaps why it was no surprise that he was allowed to leave the club on loan when Amiens got relegated that season.

On the other side, Mallorca also got relegated from La Liga and all of a sudden the move didn’t seem that attractive for Zungu. However, according to Soccer-Laduma, the lanky midfielder’s dream may not yet be over. The publication claims it has been led to believe that a new La Liga side has entered the fray for his signature.

New La Liga club shows interest

“Now, it’s understood Zungu could be switching to the Spanish La Liga with RCD Espanyol said to be keen on his services, possibly on a permanent basis.

Amiens still have the Bafana Bafana star on their books until June 2022 and are in a race against time to cash in on his services or risk him leaving as a free agent.

At the time Rangers signed Zungu on loan his price tag was reported to have been around R77-million, but the fee was later revised and taken down to around R54-million.

The financial situation Amiens find himself in currently because of Covid-19 and the fact that they were relegated to the second tier of French football two years ago means they could use the money from Zungu’s possible sale.” Read part of the publications explanation of Zungu’s situation.

Zungu as well as the South African football fraternity will be crossing fingers that this deal can come to fruition with the country not having too many players in Europe’s top leagues.
