TicketPro Dome now set to become a huge car dealership

The TicketPro Dome, used to hosting the likes of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry, will now be converted into something entirely different, after a private buyer secured the rights to the venue in Northgate, Johannesburg.

Previously known as Coca-Cola Dome, it opened on 8 April 1998 with a concert by Diana Ross. The late Nelson Mandela made an appearance at the concert, which was attended by over 15 000 people. Rapper Cassper Nyovest was the first local artist to sell out the venue, as he succeeded in his attempt to ‘Fill Up The Dome’.

Swapping stars for cars: TicketPro Dome set to change hands

The WeBuyCars company – a second-hand car dealership and exchange outfit – will now take control of the facility. The acquisition will be a massive departure from the TicketPro Dome’s current use, and musicians will be swapped for motors. Here’s what we know about the future of the large public space so far:

  • The TicketPro Dome will be able to store approximately 1 500 vehicles going forward.
  • The facility, once fully converted, will become one of the world’s biggest second-hand car dealerships.
  • WeBuyCars currently has eight branches in SA, but they are not on the same scale as this ambitious purchase.
  • No official opening date has been confirmed yet, but CEO Faan van der Walt hopes it’ll be sooner rather than later.
  • Visitors will be able to test drive cars at the venue, too…

WeBuyCars set to establish ‘world-beating’ car dealership

Faan van der Walt believes that WeBuyCars can help stimulate both the local and national economy by the time it’s up and running. He trumped up their commitment to the South African vehicle industry, and as the TicketPro Dome changes hands, stars will be replaced by cars under the iconic roof of this building.

“Apart from cementing our presence in northern Johannesburg, we are confident this growth path will have a positive impact on the economy. We have always been proud of our roots, and this next step in our expansion plan demonstrates our commitment to the South African car market, which has significant growth potential.”

Faan van der Walt
