Kaizer Chiefs latest | Itu Khune’s first words after signing new contract

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has, for the first time, reacted on how he feels after signing a new contract with the club.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper was handed a two-year contract extension by Chiefs on Wednesday after weeks of speculation around his future.

Khune said he was grateful for the opportunity given to him by Chiefs, adding that the club has a great goalkeeping department and a great coach in Lee Baxter.

In addition, Khune said Baxter told the four of them that no one is guaranteed a place in the Chiefs starting line-up despite all being at the club.

“I’m really grateful for yet another opportunity that I’ve been given by the club,” Khune told reporters.

“I think we’ve got a great goalkeeping department and a great goalkeeper coach [Lee Baxter].

“He has made it clear to us that we are all No.1s, and we have to fight for No.1 spot. We’ve always had a healthy competition, and no one is guaranteed a starting berth,” continued Khune.

Khune went further to say each and everyone of them – Daniel Akpeyi, Bruce Bvuma and Brendon Peterson included – will have to earn their place in the Chiefs starting line-up for the benefit of the club.

“We are all going to earn our place in the team. We are all going to support one another if we are not playing because we are not only doing it for own benefit but for the club’s benefit; to help the club to achieve the goals we have been set for ourselves,” he said.

Is this Khune’s last contract at Naturena?

The veteran goalkeeper feels whether or not this is his last Chiefs contract will depend on what he offers on the pitch in the next two seasons.

“But I’m very grateful for my new contract. I don’t know if it will be my last. It will depend on what I’ll do on the pitch,” added Khune.
