Correctional Services: There are NO hunger strikes for Zuma in prison
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has move to once again deny claims of a hunger strike at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where former president Jacob Zuma is serving his sentence.
“We are really appealing to the people out there to be responsible. Sharing fake information is a criminal offence and you could be prosecuted for that,” said Correctional Services’ spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
Correctional Services warns against spreading fake news
There have been some social media reports claiming that some prisoners who have been held at the same correctional facility as Jacob Zuma, have caused much mayhem over his incarceration. This prompted the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to issue several statements denying such events having ever taken place.
The department has warned of the consequences for those who continue spreading misleading information.
“An old image of a different facility is used in an effort to spread lies and instigate a sense of panic amongst the public. This is irresponsible, and such conduct carries criminal implications as anyone that creates or spreads fake news is liable for prosecution. It is important to verify such information before you share it,” Nxumalo said.
The fake news reports come as parts of KZN have been the scene of chaos recently, with protestors having torched trucks along the N2 and N3 highways – and caused damage to some properties. They are demanding Zuma’s release from prison.
So far, at least 37 people in that province have been arrested in KZN alone, while in Gauteng, more than 25 suspects have been handcuffed. The province also experienced some unrest as parts of Johannesburg, including Alexandra and Jeppe’s Town, where several businesses were looted.
