Welkom: Cash-in-transit robbers BOMB van, escape with cash and guns
Police were on Tuesday morning still searching for four armed men who bombed and robbed a G45 cash-in-transit van on the R73 near Welkom on Monday morning.
According to Christopher Singo, spokesperson of the Hawks, two security officers were on their way to Virginia.
“The officers were on their way to Virginia to collect and deliver money when they were attacked.”
FOUR SUSPECTS ATTACKED THE CASH VAN NEAR WELKOM
Singo said four armed unknown African males attacked the van.
“The suspects were driving when they opened fire at the van.”
Singo said the suspects continued to shoot at the van until it stopped.
“The suspects took two firearms from the security officers and then bombed the van.”
Singo said the men fled the scene with an undisclosed amount.
“They fled in two vehicles, a silver-grey BMW and Charcoal Mercedes Benz, both hatchback.”
According to Singo, no arrests have yet been made.
