Watch: SA-born New Zealand batsman Devon Conway reacts to Test debut ton

South African-born batsman Devon Conway made sure he marked his momentous day with a debut Test century for New Zealand against England at Lords on Wednesday.

Conway, who had the honour of making his Black Caps Test bow at the historic Lords cricket ground, made sure that the occasion would be one that will live long in his memory. Conway finished the day unbeaten and looking very comfortable on 136 at stumps on day one.

Conway joins an elite list of New Zealand batsmen

Conway’s ton meant that he became only the 12th New Zealand to score a century at Lords, a feat that ensured that his name will be inscribed on the prestigious honours board at the ground on his first attempt. He cut a very confident figure very early on, with his body language not exhibiting that of a person who was making his debut on such a big stage.

Johannesburg-born Conway did not seem fazed at all by facing some of Test cricket’s most prolific bowlers at a historic venue in a Test bow that came away from home. He looked largely untroubled by the efforts of the likes of Stuart Broad and James Anderson, repelling the English seam duo with relative ease, and casually punching them down the ground with powerful drives, in a batting exhibition that displayed pure dominance at the crease.

He reacted to his century

Speaking after the day’s play, Conway expressed what the feat meant to him.

“It’s a special, special day I don’t think I could’ve ever dreamed of something like this happening. It’s going to take a few days for me to sort of let it sink in.”

Conway has been an excellent addition to New Zealand since qualifying to play for his adopted nation late last year. Ahead of his Test debut yesterday, he had already made an impact in white-ball cricket for the Black Caps averaging 75 in three ODI’s and 59 in his 14 T20’s thus far. He now seems well on his way to proving his worth in Test cricket as well if yesterday’s performance is anything to go by.
