Patrice Motsepe’s money is working for Mamelodi Sundowns – Mark Gleeson

SuperSport’s DStv Premiership commentator Mark Gleeson has praised the progress Mamelodi Sundowns have shown since being taken over by billionaire owner Patrice Motsepe.

Sundowns once again finished a season as league winners, being able to clinch the maiden DStv Premiership title. That victory meant that Abafana ba Style walked away with a fourth title in a row.

Sundowns beaten just once all season

What had made Sundowns’ campaign even more impressive is the fact that it was an almost perfect term for the Brazilians. They went through the whole campaign without suffering defeat on their travels away from home and had only the solitary blemish to their scorecard all season, a shock home loss 2-1 to rivals Kaizer Chiefs who could claim that scalp as their most impressive moment of the season in an otherwise difficult domestic campaign for the Soweto giants.

Sundowns were able to remain undeterred following that result, however, and now seem to be an unstoppable train in the domestic league, a feat that Gleeson seemed to point towards when speaking the club having no equals on local soil. Gleeson pointed out that, years of sound financial backing from an ambitious chairman like Motsepe were starting to translate in the results. He also alluded to the fact that he didn’t see their dominance being halted by any of the teams in the league any time soon.

He believes the Brazilians are building a dynasty

“They’re building a dynasty at Sundowns. The Motsepe money is now working for them and I think they’ll dominate for some time. When I was younger, players used to want to play for Chiefs. Now they want to play for Sundowns,” said Gleeson on SAfm Sport

Gleeson is then proven correct when one looks into the recent history books of the PSL. The numbers simply don’t lie and what they say is that Sundowns have won the PSL six times in a decade. Sundowns’ biggest disappoint of the season, however, would probably not being able to go all the way in the CAF Champions League.

The club made no secret of the fact that that particular tournament was a factor in their decision to recruit heavily at the start of the season. You can expect no less from the Brazilians ahead of the next season either with transfer funds known not known to be a problem for them.
