Chiefs finished the 2020/21 season without any domestic silverware, a damning feat that sees the most successful club in the country complete six years in a row without a trophy.
Stuart Baxter the last coach to win Chiefs trophies
The last time Chiefs and their supporters tasted silverware, was during the period where the club was under the tutelage of former Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter. Amakhosi won four major trophies under the stewardship of the British coach, including two league titles sandwiched between a runner up medal, in a season where his charges narrowly missed out to Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is perhaps no coincidence then, that the Chiefs board are rumoured to have already agreed a deal that would see their former coach, Baxter return to familiar surroundings and reunited with his son and goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter at Naturena. If what Gleeson is anything to go by, Chiefs fans will definitely be hoping that his re-hiring will have a similar effect to this previous spell. Gleeson feels like Chiefs are losing their appeal
Speaking to SAfm on their sports show, the veteran broadcast journalist Gleeson, who was a part of the DStv Premiership Awards judge of convenors, did not mince his words when giving his opinion on the current state of Chiefs as a footballing entity, as well as the current and potential long term effects their shortcomings over the last six years could have.
“I think Kaizer Chiefs is on the cusp of being a fading power. The youngsters now are not even supporting Chiefs. If they don’t wake up from this slumber, they will only be left with the medals supporting them,” said Gleeson.
Speaking on Blom’s nomination
Gleeson was also on hand to comment on the nomination of young Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom despite Amakhosi suffering an embarrassing first-round defeat to GladAfrica Championship outfit Richards Bay FC. He distanced himself from the nomination before also admitting his shock pertaining to it.
“I can’t talk about Njabulo Blom being nominated for Most Promising Player in the Nedbank Cup, because I wasn’t part of that award. But I must say I was also shocked by that one (he only played 45 minutes),” said Gleeson.
