Orlando Pirates youngster tops Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu wishlist
Orlando Pirates youngster Bongani Sam is reportedly the name that tops Benni McCarthy’s wishlist as he prepares for a potential CAF Champions League foray with AmaZulu next season.
The Gqeberha-born left-back joined Pirates two seasons ago now, after a stellar breakthrough campaign with Bloemfontein Celtic. But having failed to make the impact he would’ve desired for the Buccaneers, rumours are aloft the McCarthy would like to offer him a change of scenery by signing him for AmaZulu.
Sam has struggled for game time at Orlando Pirates
The move could prove to be an attractive proposition for Sam, who would’ve seen first-hand how McCarthy, a former Pirates fan favourite himself, has managed to turnaround and rejuvenate the careers of former Pirates players whose careers were stagnant at the Bucs, before bringing them to AmaZulu and changing their fortunes by turning them into crucial members of the Usuthu squad.
He has been able to revived the careers of former Pirates players at Amazulu
The likes of Luvuyo Memela, Augustine Mulenga, Xola Mlambo, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Thabo Qalinge have all arrived in Durban and contributed positively towards the club’s top-two finish in the inaugural DStv Premiership season. All of that has come under the tutelage of McCarthy, and now the newly crowned DStv Premiership Coach of the Season will be looking to convince Sam of his project at AmaZulu,
They have more targets
Furthermore, Soccer-Laduma reports that Sam is far from the only player McCarthy has asked his Amazulu superiors to go and sign for him. It is also believed that former Maritzburg United midfielder Keagan Buchanan has long been a target of the side. In fact, the report even goes as far as claiming that the club has been in “advanced talks” with the player for a while now, and were pretty relaxed about his situation.

AmaZulu being relaxed about Buchanan could give a possible hint of how things went with regards to his proposed return to Kaizer Chiefs. It had previously been reported that the free agent had delayed making any decision on his future until his manager had heard back from Chiefs management ahead of a possible return to Naturena where he didn’t have much success previously.

Buchanan was thought to have preferred a return to Chiefs, feeling that he was more ready now for the challenge at a club of that stature and that he had unfinished business with them. However, It now seems unlikely that he will get his dream return, and may have to settle for a move to a vastly improving and impressing AmaZulu under McCarthy instead.
