Gauteng decuplets: Government now sceptical of ‘World Record’ births

There has been a stunning twist in the remarkable story of a Gauteng woman who allegedly gave birth to 10 babies on Tuesday 8 June, with government now stepping in to cool the chaotic response that has followed.

Government said in a statement this evening that despite reports suggesting that Gosiame Thamare Sithole gave birth to a world-record set of decuplets, they have thus far been unable to verify that the sensational event took place.

Government seeking verification of births

Director-general of government communications, Phumla Williams, said in the statement that her team have as of yet had no luck identifying the facility where the 10 babies were reportedly born, nor have they been able to make contact with the mother in question, (or any members of her family.

“Government has noted media reports and social media posts alleging that a South African woman has given birth to 10 babies and reportedly broken the world record,” the statement reads.

“The posts attribute the birth of the babies to Gosiame Thamara Sithole from Gauteng. Government has been unable to verify the authenticity of this birth at our facilities.”

“We need to verify this story and provide assistance where needed,” said Williams.

Guinness World Records investigating decuplet claims

Earlier, it was reported that doctors were assessing the children – as well as the mother – before any ceremonial fanfare can kick in. Jessica Dawes, a Senior Publicist for Guinness World Records, confirmed that their officials are now reviewing the birth.

“We’re aware of the news that Sithole has given birth to decuplets. We send our congratulations and best wishes to the family. At the current time, we’re yet to verify this record, as the wellbeing of both the mother and babies is a top priority.”

“Our team, alongside a specialist consultant, is looking into this and will provide any information as soon as possible.”

SA brands jump on the bandwagon

Former politician Lindiwe Mazibuko led the charge for the astonishing event to be commemorated through a #NationalBabyShower on Tuesday, with several major South African brands jumping in to offer the alleged mother and her babies what would certainly be some much needed assistance.

“Congratulations x10 ausi Gosiame & bhut Tebogo! We’ll make sure all of your bundles of joy are well nourished by #ThetasteOfHome,” said Lucky Star, who offered the woman and her family a year’s supply of pilchards.

Hungry Lion offered the family some quality fast food to commemorate the event, which has captivated the South African public all day despite no official confirmation having been delivered thus far.

“So, we’d like to offer Gosiame Thamara Sithole and her family 1x Hungry Lion 21 Piece Bucket every month for a year to help feed this KING-SIZED family. If anyone has their contact details or can put us in touch with them, please send us details,” they wrote.
