CNN reinstates analyst who masturbated during Zoom meeting
Jeffrey Toobin has made an abrupt return to CNN as the network’s chief analyst. Toobin was the butt of jokes by late-night comics back in October 2020, when he was caught masturbating on camera during a Zoom meeting with his colleagues from The New Yorker, where he also worked as a writer.
Toobin was subsequently fired from the publication and also took leave from CNN, where he was a prominent legal commentator. On Thursday, he made his first appearance on CNN, since the scandal and spoke to anchor Alisyn Camerota, who did anything but beat around the bush.
“In October, you were on a Zoom call with your colleagues from The New Yorker magazine,” Camerota recounted.
“Everyone took a break for several minutes, during which time you were caught masturbating on camera. You were subsequently fired from that job after 27 years of working there, and you since then have been on leave from CNN. Do I have all that right?”
“You’ve got it all right… Sad to say,” Toobin ashamedly responded.
Jeffrey Toobin apologises for ‘exposing himself’
Jeffrey Toobin said he had forgotten to turn off his camera during the call and did not realise that his colleagues could see him. Toobin added that he has spent the last several months going to therapy and doing some public service, including working at a food bank.
Toobin has further issued an apology to his family and all his colleagues, including those who were on that Zoom call.
“And I’m sorry to the people who read my work and who watched me on CNN who thought I was a better person than this. And so, you know, I got a lot to rebuild, but I feel very privileged and very lucky that I’m going to be able to try to do that,” he said.
