Broos is focused on form and will need a leader that can lead his young squad both on and off the pitch.

This article provides insight into the five candidates that could wear the captains armband for Bafana Bafana under Broos.

PERCY TAU

‘The Lion of Judah’ is now one of the more experienced members of the national setup. Tau is an excellent attack-minded player who will lead on the team with his performances on the field.

The Bafana Bafana winger certainly has the makings of great captain but wants to focus on his game first and foremost. He is not very interested in becoming the captain, but said he would not turn the role down.

Tau hardly saw any of the pitch while playing for Brighton and Hove Albion and Bafana has only played two games since 2019. He is also one of the over-age players selected to represent the Under-23 national side at the Tokyo Olympics.

Huge games await Tau with Bafana Bafana set to take on Uganda next Thursday and the Olympics are around the corner. Tau will be getting some much-needed game time at the Olympics and for Bafana Bafana.

Tau will be a leader in both sides, regardless of who is selected as captain.

RONWEN WILLIAMS

Williams is a great goalkeeper with cat-like reflexes and quality delivery and distribution to his team-mates.

The SuperSport United keeper’s stats have suffered by his sides dip in form.

Bafana Bafana’s current vice-captain still holds seven clean sheets but under a quality defensive set up his class will be shown.

He is agile, flexible and has an incredible reaction time.

Williams is one of the more experienced members of the side and a strong candidate to be the next Bafana Bafana captain.

MOSA LEBUSA

Lebusa is a solid and physical defender. An experienced player for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. He is happy to make the one-on-one tackle if needed. A courageous talent.

He is trustworthy at the back and is part of a Sundowns defense that has only conceded 7 times this season.

He has been in the PSL for almost a decade. Lebusa played for Ajax Cape Town before joining Sundowns. Although he isn’t very experienced at international level, he is in form and will be seen as a leader in the side.

INNOCENT MAELA

Orlando Pirates’ left-back is as gritty and tough as they get. He has stood head and shoulders above former Bafana Bafana captain Hlatshwayo this season.

Maela’s call-up to the national squad merits this. He is an excellent marksman and a brick wall on defense.

Not many will get past him and he brings in eight caps to the national side. He is one of the more experienced players in this young squad.

KEEGAN DOLLY

Dolly currently plays for French side Montpellier FC. Dolly has gathered priceless experience with his stint in Europe and France.

Experience at the highest level to add to his multitude of PSL caps. Dolly played 61 times for Sundowns and made 57 appearances for Ajax. He has since played 64 times in France. Dolly has 18 caps for Bafana Bafana and is my wildcard for selection. An experienced midfielder who knows the local style of play and has matured his game overseas in Europe.

Broos will have his work cut out for him when selecting the next captain of Bafana Bafana. He needs a player who can guide this youthful squad to the success he envisions. This will take an experienced man to lead both on and off the pitch.

Who would you like to see as the next captain of Bafana Bafana?
