AmaZulu’s Moeneeb Josephs hits back at Mamelodi Sundowns fan disputing Benni McCarthy’s award
AmaZulu goalkeeper coach Moeneeb Josephs had a spicy response to one Mamelodi Sundowns supporter who seemed to question the validity of coach Benni McCarthy’s award.

At a virtual awards ceremony, McCarthy was voted PSL Coach of the Season for his incredible work and role in turning around the fortunes of AmaZulu in the previous campaign. At the beginning of the recently concluded DStv Premiership season, Usuthu were languishing in the bottom half of the log while still under the tutelage of former club striker and MultiChoice Diski challenge team coach Ayanda Dlamini.
McCarthy led AmaZulu revival
However, when Dlamini was eventually relieved of his duties in the wake of some indifferent early season form for Amazulu. The club’s new owners did not hesitate in pulling the trigger, nor did they take too long in securing the services of their new coach. Up stepped McCarthy who had found himself handed a much-welcomed reprieve and second chance to prove his coaching acumen in the local game.

Upon his return, McCarthy announced that PSL legends and his former Bafana Bafana team-mates Josephs, as well as Siyabonga ‘Bhele’ Nomvete, would join his coaching staff. Josephs expertise between the sticks saw him enlisted as the clubs’ new goalkeeper coach, while Nomvete found himself entrusted with the responsibility of being an assistant coach at the Durban-based club.

“Slimkat” as Josephs is affectionately known as, seems to have not lost his ability to defend his team after the end of his playing days. This became evident after a rather spicy clap back to a Sundowns supporter on his official Twitter account on Monday.
After McCarthy was crowned as the DStv Priemership’s inaugural Coach of the Season, Josephs took to his official Twitter platform to post a picture which he captioned “Coach Of the Year. Period” seemingly taking a dig at all the other supporters who were disputing McCarthy’s worthiness to receive the award.
Sundowns fan made a sneaky remark about McCarthy’s award
Up stepped one Sundowns fan who might have not received the memo and replied to Josephs’ tweet saying, “Benni was honest in his acceptance speech and wena here you are singing for your supper” seemingly addressing McCarthy admitting to him being the recipient of the award being unexpected to even himself, as he would have expected the Sundowns coaching duo of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena to be the winners.
Josephs was having none of it, however. Known to be a fiery character even in his playing days, Slimkat clapped back with a response to match.
Spicy clap back from Josephs
“I sense anger, that your 3 coaches could not walk away with what our coach walked away with, COACH OF THE YEAR!…Coach Pitso’s hard work still reaping the rewards for your team I see Winking face,” said Josephs
That response then garnered a lot of indifferent reactions from soccer lovers, one half saying he should know better as a professional, and the other half saying he was right to stand up for McCarthy and what he believed in.
Josephs himself addressed this dialogue and added the following
“Yeah and also standing up for what you believe in…I won’t be bullied, my playing days are done”
Will Josephs comments come back to haunt him as he continues with his coaching career?
