Road safety: When to overtake

Arrive Alive on Saturday shared a guide for overtaking and explained that it “demands several skills, driving techniques variable conditions [such as] a clear vision of the road ahead.

It’s also important to understand how other vehicles might be affected when you overtake another drive.

“It requires correct perception and able application of mind over the machine. It also involves judgment of speed and distance and the judicious use of various car accessories like the rearview and side mirrors, transmission, steering wheel, and the braking system. It requires a good awareness of the vehicle you are driving”.

Where to overtake

Arrive Alive states that dual-lane roads “are more likely to be straighter and have a higher speed limit which makes overtaking easier”; whereas single lane roads “are not usually straight, at least not very long, and have lower speed limits”.

Overtaking is much harder on the single-lane road. You also need a straight stretch of road that is long enough that you can move out, overtake the slower vehicle, and return to a normal driving position.

The piece of road where you choose to overtake “must be free of junctions”, and it’s important to take note of any road marking indication possible junctions.

Where not to overtake

It is best not to consider overtaking at these spots:

Never overtake on the left shoulder of the road or in the emergency lane and steer clear of pedestrians crossing the road or scholar patrols. Also, be on the lookout for pedestrians moving between parked vehicles.

If overtaking can create a danger to any pedestrians such as in parking areas, building complexes, near schools etc

Bends in roads, corners, junctions, crossroads and intersections may have blind spots. The complete guide can be viewed here.
