Level 3 latest: Drive-thrus return, and there’s a big change for restaurants
If the transition into Level 4 of lockdown at the beginning of the month felt a little underwhelming, then the proposed changes for the shift into Level 3 is at the opposite end of the scale. Millions will return to work, as limits on when South Africans can leave their homes will diminish. The news is also positive for restaurants and drive-thru services, who will see further restrictions eased on Monday 1 June.

Level 3: A vital change for restaurants confirmed
President Ramaphosa confirmed on Sunday evening that, following robust discussions with the restaurant industry, some of their proposals are still being considered.
However, Cyril states that food outlets can now allow South Africans to come and collect their food from the premises; and it also seems like the fast food industry has had a profound impact on the president’s decision.
Drive-thru and collection services to return next week
Drive-thru services are getting the green-light, after weeks of sustained pressure from senior representatives. Ramaphosa did, however, rule out requests for restaurants to provide sit-in and table services to the public:
“We have held discussions with the tourism, hotel and restaurant industry regarding the challenges and hardships these sectors are experiencing.”
“They have made several proposals, regarding the measures they intend to put in place when their sectors are opened. We are giving consideration to the proposals. So, under Level 3 of the lockdown period, restaurants may open for delivery, collection and drive-thru services only.”
