In other news, the storm also claimed the lives of two people near Bonnievale on the R317. According to reports, they were trapped in a vehicle submerged in water. Western Cape officials also confirmed roads have been damaged.

In addition, major commuter routes were closed while vehicles were being swept away in some provincial districts. The local government also confirmed reports of children trapped under a bridge. They were taken to safety.

Several roads were left badly damaged, while Meiringspoort was closed – but has since been reopened. That said, the most significant damage due to the weather was reported across the Cape Winelands.

In addition, farmers from Riversonderend were evacuated on Friday while residents from Struisbaai were forced to flee their homes due to flooding in the region earlier this week.

“Those who were evacuated are currently being housed at various temporary shelters in the area”.
