Erick Mathoho opened the scoring at the FNB Stadium after just six minutes ahead of a Samir Nurkovic brace (34′, 57′) while Leonardo Castro wrapped up proceedings with his 63rd minute effort.
The result gave the Tanzanian side a mountain to climb heading into their second leg next week.

Speaking after the match, Gomes said in an interview: “It’s not a good reason to explain why we lost today, we don’t have an excuse, we weren’t tough enough for this kind of match, it’s very important to very aggressive particularly in the duels.
“Kaizer Chiefs, we knew very well, even if they’re in a bad position in the local league. As I said before the match, Chiefs are a very good team, very good offensively and today they have done a clean sheet which proves they are solid.
“Even with their bad situation in the league, we didn’t underestimate them.”
