Pitso Mosimane made a couple of key changes to his team with Taher Mohamed and Mohamed Sherif both drafted back into the line-up after starting on the bench in their midweek win over Al-Ittihad.

Al Ahly had to wait until the 33rd minute to fashion their first real opportunity of the matches when Hussein El-Shahat collected a pass from Sherif before firing wide of Mohamed Awad’s goal.

The match was goalless at the half-time break.

Zamalek started the second half the brightest but were unable to take advantage of their dominance.

It was Al Ahly who got the all-important breakthrough in the 73rd minute when substitute Salah Mohsen latched onto Amr El-Sulya’s pass before rounding Awad to fire into the back of the net.

However, Al Ahly’s joy was short-lived as Patrice Carteron’s charges managed to restore parity with 10 minutes remaining through Ferjani Sassi’s strike.

And that’s the way the match ended, 1-1.
