Infections soar: COVID-19 daily figures highest in three months
The latest COVID-19 figures have been released. According to the Health Ministry, 2 781 new cases were identified in South Africa. As of today, the death toll stands at 54 968 with recoveries at 1 519 734.
The total number of vaccines administered is 52 647 and the country has a recovery rate of 95%. That said, the daily new infections is the highest it’s been since 10 February 2021.

BREAKDOWN OF NEW CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES
As per Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s report, 2 781 confirmed cases were identified during the past 24 hours. Unfortunately, we also lost 72 patients to COVID-19-related illnesses.
As per the report: 6 patients from the Eastern Cape passed away, 13 from the Free State, 27 from Gauteng, 5 from KwaZulu-Natal, 5 from Mpumalanga, 4 from Northern Cape, and 12 from Western Cape.
At the time of publishing, the Health Ministry recorded 10 968 199 cumulative COVID-19 tests, of which 37 020 were done during the past 24 hours: 13 857 at public facilities and 23 163 at private facilities.

GLOBAL STATISTICS
At the time of publishing, COVID-19 is affecting 220 countries and territories. The global caseload stands at 160 080 581, with the death toll at 3 345 018 and recoveries at 138 863 472.
The US is the worst affected with 597 785 deaths from 33 586 136 cases. After the US, the hardest-hit countries are India with 258 3351 deaths from 23 702 832 cases, and Brazil with 428 256 deaths from 15 361 686 cases.
France has 107 119 deaths from 5 821 668 cases while Turkey recorded 43 821 deaths from 5 072 462 cases. South Africa is currently 20th on the list, preceded by Iran, Poland, Colombia, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK, and Russia.
